The fabric of Mallorca's landscape

Telas de Lenguas in Mallorca

One of the most familiar cloths seen on Mallorca is the traditional fabric of flames as it is known. Specialist company, Textil Bujosa, in Santa Maria has been hand-dyeing and designing this unique vividly coloured and cheerful fabric since 1949. The company is now run by talented brother and sister team Guillermo and Maribel (pictured) Bujosa, the third generation of the Bujosa family.

Watching the old mechanical looms producing the familiar geometric patterns, is a wonder to behold. The process for reviving an old Mallorcan design or creating a new one can take up to a month and the cotton is lovingly hand-dyed and dried on wood burners as in days of yore before being woven. This is why the weave shows small differences in colour and detail. Unlike wholesale pieces, everything is individually produced by hand in ecological cottons, linens and silks. The other designs are striped and flecked, and popular for making local historical costumes.

These days both fabrics are excellent for upholstery and the company offers a bespoke interiors service for individual clients as well as larger companies. Long may this wonderful family business thrive. It is keeping alive a hugely important part of the island’s history and cultural heritage. Do visit bujosatextil.com for further information.
